The Benefit of Belonging
December 2010 saw the official re-launch of the Shelley Point Country Club. Members of the club are rewarded with the “benefit of belonging” program, whereby they enjoy exclusive use and discounts at Shelley Point facilities.
The Shelley Point Country Club boasts one of the country’s finest 9 hole links golf courses. The challenging 9-hole links golf course winds its way through the lush peninsula.
Many links – though not all – are located in coastal areas, on sandy soil, often amid dunes, with few water hazards and few if any trees. This reflects both the nature of the scenery where the sport happened to originate, and the fact that only limited resources were available to golf course architects at the time and any earth moving had to be done by hand, so it was kept to a minimum.
The challenges of links golf fall into two categories. Firstly the nature of the courses themselves, which tend to be characterised by uneven fairways, thick rough and small deep bunkers known as "pot bunkers". Secondly, due to their coastal location many links courses are frequently windy. This affects the style of play required, favouring players who are able to play low accurate shots.
The club itself offers members a nine-hole golf course. It is the only course in South Africa to be irrigated by a Desalination Plant and one of the few on the West Coast to have buck, guinea fowl and many species of local bird life living nearby and on occasion feeding on the course itself.
The club also has two all-weather tennis courts and the bowling green is now being improved to international standards. Members can also enjoy the swimming pool as well as the hotel gym.
